Magick

The journey back was uneventful and hurried. Back the way they came, through the forest toward the east, they traveled to Eloria to share with Omnicus what they had encountered and achieved. They camped in a small meadow along the way and began again the following day. Knya rested on Madden’s back while she regained her strength. She finally stirred from a nap as the sun was mid-sky.

“How are you?” Madden asked his cargo.

“I’ve felt better… but a definite improvement,” Knya said.

“You sure scared us.”

“I’m just keeping you on your toes… or hooves,” she joked as she pulled her cape tighter.

“You two ought to be very proud of yourselves. It was very brave what you did,” Torque said, poking his head out of Knya’s satchel.

“I wish you both could have seen everything down there. It was incredible,” Braelok said.

“I felt your magick, Madden,” Knya said. “When I was still underwater and I couldn’t breathe anymore, there was a point where I felt like I had left my body. I think I might have been more than just unconscious. There was this sort of… gentle feeling, pulling me one way. I couldn’t stop. I didn’t want to. But then I heard you calling to me and I knew I was needed. I felt a burst of energy all through me. And then I woke up.”

“The mermen used some magick of their own to wake you, but I tried to help. I was calling. I tried as hard as I could to see you healthy again, awake and smiling.”

“Must have helped, because I knew it was you, calling me back.” As she spoke, they came to the top of a hill. On the other side, Eloria could be seen far in the distance.

“Ah, thanks be to the goodness. We’ve almost made it,” Torque said.

The words gave Madden a sense of comfort, although he knew that they had only achieved the first part of their task, and another trial was to come.

“What is that over there?” Knya pointed above the island’s mountain range. “That’s not any bird I’ve ever seen.”

Soaring high over the mountains was a huge black-and-grey creature that none of them could quite make out.

“You got me, but I think we better lay low until it passes,” Braelok said. The creature continued to soar away from them, and soon it was out of sight.

They reached the fortress late in the evening and finally felt a bit of safety within its walls. Meirvot greeted them and had a meal waiting. Omnicus had requested to be awakened should they arrive, but since it was so late and all of them were exhausted, Torque insisted they all rest and share what they had learned in the morning. No one contested. They were shown to their sleeping quarters and quickly fell into slumber.

The next morning, after a much-needed night of good sleep, they went to see the Oracle. He looked exactly as he had when they had left him, draped over his throne, with fruits and food being brought to him.
